To Combat a Dragon

~ Mellody Gotwalt

An ancient bow hangs above the

fireplace. In years past it has

captured fresh food for the village,

and defeated many enemies. But

now it is in need of dusting, and

it’s string worn thin and too easily

broken. Hanging there as a reminder of better times. It is not alone.

In many dwelling across the land, weapons lay on display worn and tattered. Others instead lie tucked away, in hopes to forget the wounds of battle but that in vain. Spirits and bones weak from inflicted hopelessness.

Outside a dragon wages destruction with a small troop of warriors, once healthy but now powered by his breath of poisonous delusions. While these ravage the land, elders too weak to take up the battle whisper wisdom to the younger ones. These stronger ones never understood the traditions of old, only the history of defeats.

Broken fortresses that once protected the earth are becoming shattered, and the refuges for the weaker ones and drained of their supplies. Piles of goods tainted by dust from the dragon’s breath lay offered in their place. But the wise know not to trade for them.

In days when truth is cause for harm, silence has become a shield. But it is a shield without strength. Masked from the poison, those unblinded understand it is time now to design better instruments. Pulling from ancient wisdom, truth can regain its wings like smoke rising from old. The victory remains while hope still breathes. Fill your baskets with it and share generously with your neighbors and friends.

Together, we will triumph.
